In the latter half of the 2013 rugby season Headstrong Sport Psychology Experts Mike McInerney and Stuart Pattison joined the Bishops Rugby setup. With schoolboy rugby in South Africa, and in Cape Town specifically, becoming increasingly competitive, improving teams and players’ mental preparation as well as their mental performance potential has become imperative. Our focus with the 1st XV took the form of understanding the nature of Bishops Rugby and the specific pressures and stresses that the players and coaching staff face. Our aim was to enhance the systems within the team by supporting existing communication and leadership structures, and providing one-on-one support for various individuals within the team. A heavy focus was placed on recreating a positive self and team belief while creating environments of heightened trust and pride. Furthermore, our work included various assessment techniques that provided players and coaches with insight into the current mental profile, allowing them to effectively enhance strengths and further develop and improve on their weaknesses.
